James Ferrell Bell, born 8 September 1932 in Joliet, Illinois, was a 1950 graduate of Joliet Township High School. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a BS degree in Management and a minor in Fine Art Graduated from the US Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1972
He retired from the US Army Reserves as a Colonel in 1983. In retirement, he established an art studio known as "Col James F. Bell Military Historical Artist".
