Biography from Museum of Art and History (MOAH):
Gregory Martin's artwork explores the relationship between human ideals and practice. Utilizing fine art, decorative arts and natural science depictions of landscape, he depicts nature and human activity as models of representation to explore our relationship with our environment in paintings, decorative objects and diorama installations.

A native of California, he has spent much of his time exploring the diverse landscapes and natural environments of the American west. Ever present is the development and commerce shaping the land and the marketing of it as a commodity and a dream. The history is both fascinating and tragic. The truth is often very different than the story of the moment and the dreams being sold. Another strong influence is the diverse grass-roots cultures that have flourished in California simultaneously and often in contrast to the manufactured culture of the entertainment industry.

Prior to earning an MFA in Painting at Claremont Graduate School he illustrated for publishers, ad agencies and corporate clients including: N.Y. Times, Newsweek, Omni, Dell, Intel, AT&T, Disney, McDonalds, Nabisco, and 3M. The familiarity with visual marketing strategies is a subject of inquiry in his current work.

He has been teaching since 2002 as a visiting lecturer at colleges including USC, UCSD, and currently Otis College of Art and Design where some of his courses partner students with environmental sites such as the Los Angeles River as a source for research and response
