| Claude Backus was born in Illinois on March 31, 1876. Backus had a dental practice in Chicago and studied painting there at the Art Institute. Upon moving to San Diego in the 1920s, he had both a dental practice and an art studio in La Jolla at Bird Rock. He died there on June 16, 1941. His works include landscapes of the desrt around Palm Springs and Mt San Jacinto.
