This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Tom Nielsen brings to each canvas over five decades of painting experience.  Beginning with lessons and encouragement by his grandmother - a talented artist herself - he began working with pastels at an early age and was oil painting by ten.  He is largely self studied, devoting much attention to the disciplines and methods of artist he admires past and present as well as attending workshops by artist such as John Howard Sanden and Scott Christensen.  In particular, he admires artists of the Newlyn School who painted the maritime life around Cornwall, England in the late 19th century.  The seascapes of William Trost Richards also made a significant impression on his style and subject matter.

Born and raised in American heartland, his childhood was one adventure after another on the backwaters of the Mississippi River.  Dreams of going to sea led Tom to join the Navy after high school and after several years of life aboard ships and small boats, he returned to his home town where he established his first studio aboard a houseboat.  Soon after, he moved to the Washington, DC area and divided his time between graphic design and painting.  Portraits dominated his career at first, but he longed to paint landscapes and seascapes as well, and gradually found a balance between the two disciplines.

In addition to his portraits and paintings that can be found in collections worldwide, he designed a commemorative silver dollar for the US Mint and a bronze medal for the US Congress.  In 2004, his paintings of The Marshes of Glynn were given by Georgia Gov. Sunny Perdue to each of the Leaders attending the G8 Sea Island Summit.

He is a member of the American Society of Marine Artists.

Tom and his artistic wife, Jan share a studio in a historic building near the town of Carrollton, GA and live in the loft above.  They have four children.
