Following is the obituary of the artist, Press-Enterprise, January 28, 2010, Riverside, California.

Evelyn was a longtime Riverside resident who was a noted artist and children's book illustrator. She passed away of natural causes at the age of 82. Evelyn was born to Otto and Ada Siedschlag in Chicago in 1927. At the age of four she relocated to Long Beach with her family, and spent the rest of her life in Redlands and Riverside.

Evelyn studied art at Pepperdine University, where she began a career as an oil painter which spanned over sixty years. Evelyn's oil paintings won numerous awards including first place at the Southern California Exposition and first place at the Annual La Mirada Fiesta des Artes.

Her paintings hang in many permanent collections including the Central Iowa Art Museum and the Riverside Art Museum as well as in several private collections. Her work was represented by Fiengarten and MacKenzie galleries in Los Angeles and the Richard Challis Gallery in Laguna Beach.

Evelyn taught painting at San Bernardino Valley College and privately at the Palette Club in Palm Springs. Evelyn was also on the staff of the Federal Government's Visual Arts Project and for several years painted watercolor portraits at the Riverside Art Museum as part of the former Fun-in-the-Sun art festival in downtown Riverside.

Later in life Evelyn became a children's book author and illustrator. Her work included numerous paper doll books featuring children and cats dressed in Victorian costumes. Her best-known book was The Baby Book, published by Merehurst Ltd. of London, England which was translated into several languages and sold worldwide. The book was re-issued in 2008 by Sterling Publishing, a subsidiary of bookseller Barnes & Noble, as part of The Baby Box.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her brother Robert Siedschlag, sister Ruth Dawson, as well as her first husband John Gathings and second husband Donald J. Butler. Evelyn is survived by her sons James Gathings of Huntington Beach, William Gathings of Yucaipa, John and Robert Gathings, both of Riverside, David Butler of Riverside, Donald Butler of Palo Alto, California; her daughter, Donna Rice of Glendale, Arizona; as well as two grandchildren.
