Jane Valentine, at 43, is one of Australia's pre-eminent and rare marble sculptors. She lives in Sydney and works on the other side of the world, mainly in the Italian village of Pietrasanta, where Michelangelo once lived and sourced his marble. Sometimes she works in Xiamen, south east of China, as well as Cairo, Egypt.

As a carver she finds all three places inspiring. Carving is one of the earliest art forms of sculpture, which still carries the imprint of the past, the artisans' knowledge that passed down through the centuries to each successive generation. Yet while Valentine's practice honors the traditional methods, she is very much a 21st century practitioner.

Her sculpture, Unrequited, was an installation in marble of a wing which had been separated from the body of an angel.

Lying on the ground at its' side is a quiver containing the fallen angels arrows. The wing is large enough to demonstrate the delicacy, elegance and softness of each feather. The marble is a pure white, Italian Statuario, quarried from Michelangelo's cave, from the quarry he discovered and opened in his search of finding the purest statue quality marble. Over months, the piece has been lovingly hand carved and draws the viewer to its feminine essence of fragility.

It is exquisitely beautiful, whilst the texture is both delicate and smooth it is also raw, the marble is cool as well as sensual. Its' fragility brings out all the elements associated with love and pain.

After researching hundreds of images and sculptures, and tracing through Italian cemeteries studying the depiction of angels, Valentine returned to two sculptures that have haunted her for over 20 years The winged victory of Samothrace (artist unknown) and Nike e amore by Canova, for inspiration.
