The Dutch artist Paul Jansen (1960) began his artistic career as a photographer, and a certain photographic influence can still be found in his current paintings. The distinctive compositions and frameworks that characterize his cow portraits are a good example of this. The cow has become one of the most important themes in Paul Jansen's work during the last few years. The artist is really fascinated by the strange and sometimes absurd shape of this animal and the physical and unpretentious "being" that it conveys.

Unlike cattle painters of previous centuries where the cattle is more a part of, or decoration of, the landscapes of Jansen place the cow as far to the front so that there is almost no place for a landscape.

Some of his cow portraits seem almost abstract because of the colour and flatness that Jansen deploys in the open space and the cow head is often placed onto the surface in such a way as to make the open space as interesting as possible. He paints the cow as an individual with its own soul and its own personality.
