Serafijn (Seraphin François) Vermote was born in the Belgian village of Moorsele on 24 April 1788. He received his training as an artist at the Academies of Kortrijk and Brugge.

In 1816,he was commissioned by Charles Carton de Winzele to decorate his castle ‘t Hooghe in Zillebeke. That year, he spent two months in Paris, where he mostly copied paintings.

Back in Ypres (Ieper), he is said to have studied at the Academy and painted views of Ypres. Certainly from 1827 on, he lived in Kortrijk, where he  was appointed teacher at the Academy in 1832.

He died there on 3 April 1837. Although he painted portraits, cityscapes, and even religious scenes, his fame today derives from the hundreds of 'Views of Flanders' (Belgium) drawings.  He was commissioned to make the city views by J.Van Huerne between 1812 and 1815.
