This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Sidney Noyes Riggs was a Renaissance* man, born in New Jersey in 1892. He is most remembered for his linoleum block* prints and woodcuts* of the Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod and Nantucket areas in the tradition of the famous Provincetown woodblock printers.

Riggs worked as an experimenter for Thomas Edison, and later as an educator. He graduated from Syracuse University and obtained a doctoral degree from New York University.

He was a published author of Arrows & Snakeskin, Lippincott 1962, and The Dukes Intelligener, 1960 Dukes County Historical Society, Edgartown.  He also worked as a school principal.

In 1922, he married poet, Dionis Coffin Riggs, a descendent of the original settlers of Martha's Vineyard, where the couple spent many summers and retired in 1954. He eventually illustrated a number of her books including From Off Island, a 1940 bestseller; Sea Born Island:Poems, 1969; and The Season Within, 1967;  His woodcuts appeared in other books such as Martha's Vineyard: Poems by Marion Lineaweaver and Richard R Smith; and Vineyard Poems and Prints by Joseph Chase Allen

Sidney and Dionis had several children including Cynthia who became a well received mystery writer.

Sidney Riggs died in West Tisbury in 1975. Some of his correspondence and prints can be found in the special collections department of the Syracuse University Library.

Submitted by Robert Savage, private collector.  His sources are Google searches, Amazon and Abe Books.
