BIOGRAPHY
Daniel Price Brown BFA, LLD (1939)

A prominent Canadian painter, draftsman and printmaker, Daniel Price Brown (AKA: Daniel Price Erichsen-Brown; AKA: D.P. Brown) was born in Forestville, Ontario and currently lives in a rural area north of Toronto, Ontario. He’s lived in Ontario for most of his professional life, except for about a decade in the 1990s when he lived in Baltimore, Maryland and later Brussels, Belgium.

His mediums include egg tempera, silverpoint*, carbon pencil, colored pencil, pen & ink, and serigraph*. His subjects include portraits, landscapes, figures, still life, nudes, interiors, farm life, animals, social commentary, allegory* and genre*. His style is Realism*, the AskART images are good illustrations of it.

His formal art education was at Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick (1958 – 1961) where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree studying under Alex Colville, Lawren P. Harris and Edward Pulford. Brown’s family background also provided some unique educational opportunities, his father, John Price Erichsen-Brown, was a member of the Canadian consular service whose various postings allowed Daniel, guided by his mother, to visit museums in Brussels, Florence, Rome, Bruges, Ghent, Amsterdam, Paris, and London. In addition to that, Daniel’s grandfather, Frank Erichsen-Brown (see AskART), was a prominent lawyer and an amateur artist with a summer home on Go Home Bay (Georgian Bay, Ontario), where his guests included artist friends such as A.Y. Jackson, Frederick Varley and Will Ogilvie.  When Daniel visited, as a child, he was allowed to accompany his grandfather and the visiting Canadian art icons on sketching trips. (1) (2)

Brown’s works have been included in group exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C. (1964); Museum London, Ontario (1967); the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Quebec (1970); Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto (1970); Mount Allison University Art Gallery, Sackville, NB (1974); Winnipeg Art Gallery, Manitoba (1975); and the Nickle Arts Museum, Calgary, Alberta (1985). The 1985 retrospective exhibition titled “D.P. Brown: Twenty Years” visited the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario; Art Gallery of Windsor, Ontario; Owens Art Gallery, Sackville, New Brunswick; Nickle Arts Museum, Calgary, Alberta; Gallery Stratford, Ontario; and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Brown’s works have also been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows at prominent commercial galleries such as Kaspar Gallery, Toronto; Dunkelman Gallery, Toronto; Loch Gallery, Toronto; Mira Godard Gallery, Toronto; Fischer Fine Art Ltd., London, England; Bayard Gallery, New York City; and Banfer Gallery New York City.

His works are avidly collected in Canada, they are traded on the Canadian auction market, and they’re in several corporate and museum collections.

According to the Canadian Heritage Information Network* and individual museum websites, his works are in the permanent collections of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre (Kingston, Ontario), Art Gallery of Hamilton (Ontario), Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (Halifax), Museum London (Ontario), Owens Art Gallery (Sackville, N.B.), Sherbrooke Museum of Fine Arts (Quebec), and the Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery (Owen Sound, Ontario).
