Victoria Putler makes paintings that are literal descriptions of marginal spaces. The paintings describe empty landscapes using pale, pastel colours almost equal in tone. Putlers images are of roadside verges or a road disappearing into the horizon where the perspective is definite but softened by the close tonal range in colour. Putler wants the paintings to suspend the viewers’ gaze between surface abstraction and a place that is oddly familiar yet non specific. Victoria Putler was educated at Goldsmiths University of London, UK and awarded the Neville Burston Award for Painting at Goldsmiths University of London in 1999. Recent exhibitions include Family Business, PM Gallery & House, London (2003); Amber, Galleria Alberto Peola, Turin (2000). There is little room for comfort in the work that Derek Ogbourne has created. Ogbourne captures the sadness of mortality and the fragility of our existence within the context of his work. He explores our collective fears and weaknesses by creating scenarios that are at times alarming– scenarios that are charged with a darkly surreal energy that captures our morbid fascinations. His work is powered by the frenetic and exhilarating ongoing plot of big themes: physical life, death, violence, beauty and the sublime; landscape and vision. Pulsing with the strengths and frailties of what it is like to be human, his obsessive preoccupations result in deeply complex, emotionally engaging artworks. Alongside the ongoing Museum of Optography, Ogbourne also works with a diversity of artistic mediums ranging from photography and large-scale landscape drawings to video and film.
