Artist Statement:

I'm originally from West Virginia, but I have lived in Salem, Ore., for the past 31 years and call Oregon my home. I never majored in art, though I have taken a half-dozen art classes while at Marshall University in my hometown of Huntington, W.Va. I 'discovered' that I had a talent for art quite by accident when I was in my mid-20s: I needed art for my first apartment, but I ran out of money just setting up the apartment and buying furniture for it. I went to the local art store, bought acrylic paints and canvases and began creating abstracts.

I consider myself to be mostly self-taught. I did take classes in portraiture for several years from a Salem portraits artist, JoAnn Bently. A huge influence on my painting style was Norman Rockwell, the American illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post. Most recently, another influence has been Douglas Simonson in Honolulu. Other influences were Rembrandt, for portraiture; and Van Gogh, Monet and Childe Hassam for their use of color. I retired from a career in journalism in February 2007 and have set up an Internet art business -- as a way to supplement my retirement.

I love to tell a story in paint. I work almost exclusively in oil, though I also have painted in acrylic and done some print making with found objects and a few etchings.

I make my own canvases, using linen in most cases, though I have experimented with burlap as a painting surface. I also have used store-bought canvas and masonite board as a painting surface.

Presently I am working on a series of male nudes called Clothing-Optional World and a series called Men as Animals. Also I'm a working on a graphic art series called the Pride Series for the gay community at large.
