This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Larry Wolhandler

"Wolhandler’s paintings are totally, deliberately, almost delicately abstract.  Are they windows with carefully balanced, almost anti-compositional panes?  No, you cannot look through these frontal planes.  Because of the use of pastel yellows and pinks and subtle, soft, sanded-down surfaces, the flat rectangles seem to emit light.  Wolhandler’s wonderful paintings  -- and the related works on paper -- are serene and luxurious.  They are as much about touch as they are about color and light.  Is that their secret? Yes, they are color, light, and touch, made whole." - John Perreault is a critic, poet, artist, and past president of the American Section of the International Association of Art Critics.

Larry studied at the Ecole National Supèrieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, France from 1974 to 1976.  This was the beginning of a 10 year residence in France.  During that time, he taught art at the American University in Paris.  He won a fellowship at the American Cultural Center and received a 3-year residency at the prestigious Cité International des Arts in the Marais in Paris, France.  During this period, he showed work extensively at various galleries, such as:  Gallerie du 7eme, Angus Françoise, Au Festival du Marais, Au Cité des Arts.

He returned to New York in the mid-1980's and continued to show his work at the following galleries:  OK Harris, Ann Harris, Glynn Palmer, Gracie Mansion, Sascha 527 in Baltimore, MD.

On hiatus from the art market during the 1990's, he focused on creating his unique, sublime style.  He also became an entrepreneur.  He started a very successful restaurant, named, of all things, Painters, which focused on hanging art by emerging artists.  While actively painting during that time, he has only recently begun exhibiting again.  His work is considered "one of New York's best kept art secrets," making major inroad into significant, prestigious NYC and Hamptons collections.  His work has now taken to the international stage, being sold abroad and exhibitions planned in Europe and other exotic locals.
