Brendan Hesmondhalgh was educated at North East Wales Institute of Art and Design, then
Edinburgh College of Art. Brendan works primarily in ceramic and
creates bold animal designs that are often mounted on ceramic plinths.
He uses a hand-building technique that deliberately cracks the surface
of the clay. By pushing out a sheet of clay from the inside the surface
breaks as it stretches. In this way the wrinkles, texture folds can be
readily incorporated into the shape. The wet flexible clay can be pushed
out from the inside to form the fullness of a belly, the line of a rib
or the undulation of a muscle.
He has won numerous awards,
fellowships and prizes for his work, and as his work escalates from
smaller scale garden sculpture to larger scale pieces. He has been
selected for various private, public and corporate commissions.
