This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Erin Hanson was born in Portland, Oregon and was raised in Los Angeles, California. As a young girl, her family moved to the Mojave Desert while still attending her school in La Canada. Taking long walks among the Joshua Trees by moonlight is Hanson's fondest memory of living in the
desert. The alien Joshua Trees, flat landscape, and jagged buttes inspired an early love for desert landscapes.

Erin Hanson is a life-long painter, beginning her study of oil painting at 8 years old, under the tutelage of Cesar Jimenez, at Delphi Academy in La Canada, California. Hanson studied oils, acrylics, watercolors, pen and ink, charcoal, and drawing from her teacher during the following 9 years. As a teenager, she worked in a mural studio, Paytan Place, creating paintings for restaurants and casinos. Here she applied the techniques of acrylics on the grand scale of 40-foot canvases.

A high school scholarship took her to Otis College of Art, where she studied figure drawing. A graduate of UC Berkeley, Erin Hanson took pause from art to major in Bioengineering.  She has since spent many years rock climbing and painting the scenery of Utah, Nevada, Arizona and California.

Hanging precariously and horizontally from red sandstone, fifty feet above the ground, may not seem like it would inspire the creation of oil paintings, but that is exactly what happened with Erin Hanson. After a lifetime of experimenting in different styles and mediums, it wasn’t until Hanson moved to the outskirts of Las Vegas to rock climb at Red Rock Canyon that her painting style was consolidated by a single inspiration and force of nature.

Erin Hanson has created a style of her own, bringing elements of classic impressionism together with modern expressionism, and a dash of “plein-air style.”  Her goal is to create oil paintings which 'stand out in crowd', bringing a fresh new look to contemporary Western landscapes.

Her style has been called “Open-Impressionism,” due to her unusual use of wide brush strokes applied without layering, bold outlining, and a textural mosaic in the painting built with contrasting colors. A colorful underpainting gives a unique, glowing effect to her paintings.  The rocks themselves seem to dictate her painting style, sometimes bold and dark, other times softened by a fragile light.
