Born in Dakar in 1970 Mamady Seydi lives in Mbour in Senegal and graduated from the National School of Art in Dakar in 1997. He is one of the most exciting artists to emerge from West Africa in recent years. Working with iron and a variety of materials including sackcloth and wood, Seydi creates mythological half animal, half human figures in installations inspired by Wolof folk tales and through his exposure to Léopold Sédar Senghor and Abdoulaye Sadji’s collection of folk tales "Leuk le Lièvre" written in 1953 to both teach French and reconnect Senegalese students with their oral folk history. His work is both exciting on a visceral and emotional level, intellectually engaging and educational; addressing contemporary issues but always open to interpretation and reinterpretation depending on how installations are arranged. His large installation The one who does not know where he goes must return where he comes from?, shown at Dak’Art Biennale 2012, was inspired by the fuel shortages in Senegal in 2008 and the chaos that ensued at petrol stations. The artist created numerous small figures with animal heads and human torsos and placed them in archaic carriages in a queue formation satirising modern man’s over dependence on fossil fuels. Mamady Seydi was awarded the Intergovernmental Agency of the Francophonie at Dak’ Art 2000. He has participated is several residencies in France and the United States, including at; Art Omi, New York (2007) and John Paul Blachère Foundation, France (2005) and has exhibited in Africa, Europe and the United States. Exhibited: May 2013, ‘Genesis’ at 'Le Fleuve en Couleurs', Les Comptoirs du Fleuve, Saint-Louis du Sénéga. Curated by Joëlle le Bussy.
