This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in 1961, Scott Wallace Johnston is a fine artist and portrait painter whose work has been described as “realistic impressionism” and “evocative of John Singer Sargent”

Johnston began his training at an early age, encouraged by a high school art teacher to take figure drawing classes when he was 14. At the urging of family friend, Millard Sheets, Johnston attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, earning a BFA in Illustration. It was there, under the instruction of colorist Dan McCaw, that he was introduced to the work of numerous luminaries of the past who would later influence his gallery and portraiture work, including Diego Velasquez, Frans Hals, Anders Zorn and Joaquin Sorolla.

He went on to pursue a career as a freelance illustrator specializing in realism, and developing strong skills in draftsmanship and design. His work appeared on billboards, packaging, magazine ads, and CD covers for numerous, well-known corporate clients.

After a career as a freelance illustrator, Johnston transitioned to fine art and portraiture. Working primarily in oils, his work has been described by the Informed Collector as “refined and personable”.

Johnston is director of the Historic Tuesday Night Figure Study Group at Arte Verissima in Oakland, California. He is a member of the Portrait Society of America, Oil painters of America and the Art Renewal Center.
