Hoang Sung (b.March 1, 1926)

Born in the ancient land of Hung Yen, located in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam, he joined the Viet Minh front in Huong Canh commune, Binh Xuyen district, Vinh Yen province (now called Vinh Phuc province) at the age of seventeen.  With a gift for drawing, he actively assumed propaganda activities, painted panel posters and cartoons.  In 1946, he was assigned to work at Information Service of Vinh Yen province.  During the war, he was appointed to work at various agencies and then at the Information Directorate until 1953.

In 1954, he returned to Hanoi and continued his work of propaganda through painting, and graduated from Hanoi Fine Arts University in 1960.  In 1972, when Vietnam Television began, he was appointed head of the presentation department, and in 1985 he became Deputy Director of Vietnam Television Technical Center.

He produced a lot of paintings of various materials: wood carving, pastel, silk, lacquer.  Rural areas where women are working hard in the early morning or in the late evening, countryside hamlets in Northern Vietnam delta, isolated mountain villages and crowded market scenes full of busy activity in the North West highlands.  He produced hundreds of lacquer wares of medium and large sizes.  His works were displayed in individual or group exhibitions in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other countries in the world, and collected in Vietnam Fine Arts Museum as well as in private collections in Vietnam and abroad.

Hoang Sung's lacquer wares show a plain, free style, helping viewers perceive the beauty of everyday and ordinary life of simple-hearted people living in Vietnam.  His works have big, strict arrangements with several figures lively painted on the basis of careful study.  He painted the exotic faces and colorful dresses of minority ethnic women of Thai, Dao, Ha Nhi, H'Mong, together with mountain landscape and daily life tools typical of each ethnicity.  But he  also painted city life, notably the young girls of Hanoi, in their traditional form-fitting "ao dai" dress, and men and women relaxing and sitting with their friends, or as they are in work and daily life activities throughout the streets.  He captured different walks of life with a powerful  brush-stroke, trapping people's postures and emotions in a frozen moment that vividly depicts realistic situations.

The colors in his paintings are mainly used from traditional colors and materials: red, pearl red, green, blue, patches of mysterious dark and light brown of the Hong River alluvial soil, incrusted egg-shell, gold and silver leaves on big size lacquer wares.
