Biography from Artmark:
Born in 1843 in Ploiesti, Michael Stefanescu belongs to an era that has witnessed a fierce battle between traditionalism and modernism.  In 1864 he began studies at the National School of Fine Arts in Bucharest.  At the age of 26 he participated in the "foreign competition" with the subject "Adam and Eve finding the body of their son Abel" and won first place, thus obtaining a scholarship which didn't materialize due to lack of funding.

Through the influence of his teacher, Theodor Aman, he was able to borrow some money and go to Paris in order to study at the School of Fine Arts.

After 1873, the artist emphasizes action and adventure unsteady, oscillating between the French and Italian art seeking to achieve a major work.  Atypical for his generation, Stefanescu is attracted to the study of nature, I. Andreescu said: "M. Stefanescu has a good landscape fabric superior to all other."

In the late nineteenth century we find Stefanescu succumbed to illness in Switzerland.  His artistic vision is characterized by an attention to detail and a photographic precision.

His painting "Still Life with shrimp and scallops" created in 1897, captures the Italian influence on the artist who constructs painterly space in the sfumato technique and uses linear perspective with a single vanishing point.
