This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in San Francisco, Chesley Bonestell became a painter, etcher and designer and was especially known for his fantasy, space subjects. He was a student at the Mark Hopkins Institute and leaning on his early interest in astronomy, he used this subject as his primary focus in his artwork.

He also studied architecture at Columbia University and was hired by Willis Polk in Berkeley, serving as their chief designer. He worked for Hollywood studios as a matte artist from 1938 to the 1950s and did backgrounds and special effects for outer-space themed movies. In the latter part of his career, he became a noted illustrator of these subjects while living on the Monterey Peninsula.

His work is in the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, and the Adler Planetarium in Chicago.
