Born in Greenlow, Scotland in 1799 to John Linnen and Isabel Dickson Linnen, John Linen/Linnen was one of nine children. He was christened January 17, 1799 in Greenlaw, Berwickshire, Scotland. He apparently died without children. He became a painter of miniature portraits in New York City, where he emigrated with his artist brother, George Linen, in 1834. Previous to settling in the United States, he studied at the Royal Academy in Edinburgh, Scotland.
