A painter and sculptor known for her abstract, non-representational unconventional lifestyle, she grew up in New York, having been born in Brooklyn. She attended art classes at Leonardo da Vinci Art School and at age twenty two, married painter Balcomb Greene. They traveled together in Europe the first five years of their marriage and then settled in New York City where she took a studio in Greenwich Village.
Gertrude and several others organized the American Abstract Artists Association (showing 500 of 1920 characters). |
