This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Andrew Warren, a landscape and marine painter, was one of a number of artists who made extended trips through Latin America in the 19th century.

He made a second visit to Central America (Nicaragua) in search of fresh material, and also perhaps due to a burst of interest that had developed about the region due to plans for the creation of a canal route across the Isthmus of Panama.

His painting, 'The Old Cathedral, Panama', (1866) depicts colonial churches, recognizable by their domes and steeples, often 'stock' features in panoramic landscapes of the region at that time.

Warren, whose birth date is unknown, was born in Coventry, New York to a successful farming family. He worked on the farm until he began his studies with Tompkins H. Matteson at Sherburne, New York. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design beginning 1854, and by 1860, had established a studio in New York City.

Once established there, he traveled extensively to both North and South America. In 1867, he reportedly was "away on his second visit to Central America in search of 'fresh material'. (Pisano 84). In Chili, he painted numerous landscapes especially at Valparaiso. In addition to his South America travels, he spent much time on Mt. Desert Island, Maine. Painting bucolic scenes with a sense of the totality of nature, he likely looked back on his growing up years at Coventry. He was also much inspired by the nature poet William Cullen Bryant and the Scottish poet, Robert Burns.

Ronald Pisano, "Long Island Landscape Painting"
