This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Junius Sloan died in Oak Glen, California, just outside of Redlands in 1900.  He was on a ladder climbing up a tree when he fell to his death. Oak Glen is in the foothills above Yucaipa, CA and now is where apples are grown.  Junius was married to Sara L. Spencer, whose father devised the Spencerian Script.

Biography from Brauer Museum Of Art:
Born in Kingsville, Ohio, Junius Sloan was entirely self taught as an artist.  In 1848, he began a career as an itinerant portrait painter and traveled in Ohio, Illinois, and Pennsylvania.  In 1857, he moved to New York City and shared a studio with Julian Edward Bryant (1836-1865), a nephew of William Cullen Bryant.  Although Sloan considered himself primarily a portrait painter, he was well aware of the Hudson River School painters and was a particular friend of Cincinnati landscape painter, Robert S. Duncanson.

In 1858, he moved to Erie, Pennsylvania and painted portraits for a few years but after 1864, concentrated on landscape painting.  He made many sketching trips into the Catskill Mountains, the Hudson River Valley, and Vermont.

In 1864, he moved to Chicago, then left for a couple of years and then returned in 1873 for the remainder of his life.

More than 250 of his paintings are in the Brauer Museum, Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, and included are some midwestern landscapes that he painted on visits to his parents' home at Wethersfield, Illinois in 1866.
