|This biography from the Archives of AskART:|
|A landscape and genre painter, Thomas Farrer was born in London, England and studied there with John Ruskin. From 1860 to 1884, he exhibited at the National Academy of Design and from 1862 to 1868, exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1872, he returned to England, where he lived until his death in 1891.|
The following, from Andrew Melville-Smith, South Australia, a descendant of the artist. He has compiled the data from a variety of sources.
"Farrer, (THOMAS CHARLES), an English painter, born in London, December 16,
1838. His father would not permit him to learn to read till he was seventeen
years old. He learned drawing in a free school established by Mr. Ruskin, and in 1858 came to New York, where he became a very successful teacher of art. He served for a time as a soldier in the Federal army in the war of 1861-65, returning in 1869 to England. His influence upon American art was great and wholesome."

Thomas Charles Farrer, after whom my boy Tom was named, was a charming man, a favorite wherever he went. He was a fine and sensitive artist, a
delightful talker with a keen sense of humor, and a dear companion to us
children. He was very good looking, and always seemed more like a brother
than a Father. He took me with him several times when he went to Burnham
Beeches to paint. We stayed at a little cottage on the common, and I used to
wander about the woods by myself most of the day, making up stories, etc.
Nan and I were both engaged during the last year of his life, but he died
before any of us were married. I often thought, during the fourteen years
that Phil and I lived in Spain, how he would have loved to have stayed with
us and painted in that land of glorious colour and romance.
