This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Paris, France in 1832, Edward Jump was spurred by the Gold Rush  to come to California in 1852. His sketches made on a trip to the Fall River waterfall with James Hutchings were used to illustrate Hutching's California Magazine in 1857.

A versatile artist, in San Francisco he made labels for whiskey bottles, lithographs, and caricatures of prominent citizens and contemporary issues. Jump was active in San Francisco until the earthquake in October 1865.

Returning from a trip to France in 1868, he then established himself as a successful portrait painter in Washington, DC. There he married a performer from a visiting French opera company. During the 1870s he worked in NYC as a comic illustrator for Leslie's and then started an illustrated paper in Montreal, which failed.

The couple then went to New Orleans, Cincinnati, and St Louis.

In 1880 the Jumps settled in Chicago where he eked out a living sketching circus and theatrical posters. The result of a stormy marriage, poverty, and alcohol led to his suicide on April 21, 1883. His works are rare.
