|  From his studio in Cody, Wyoming, he creates dramatic landscape paintings as well as work that reflects his interest in the people and animals of the West.
He works in watercolor, oil, and drawing mediums. He received two Gold Medals at the American Indian and Cowboy Artists Show in San Dimas, California.; the Peter Hassrick Merit Award, Helena, Mont.; Audubon Wildlife, Best of Show Award, Dubois, Wyo.; and the Nick Eggenhoffer Award in 1994. Mel is named in Who's Who in Art and Who's Who in the West.
