Comments: "Safe in the Forest" offers a rare early masterpiece by Sir Edwin Landseer. The deer depicted suggests a Woburn Park exotic species, possibly a young Russian Red Deer living among the varied exotic herd at the 6th Duke of Bedford's deer park during the early 19th century (see examples of this herd in "Deer in Coldbath Fields, Woburn Park",1835-39,Collection of Marquess of Tavistock). In an 1835 letter from Bedford to Landseer discussing "Deer in Coldbath Fields", Bedford also reminds Landseer of his offer to finish the "Corsican" deer (unlocated). In this regard, Landseer probably chose instead (or additionally)to depict the young Russian Red Deer of "Safe in the Forest" and kept this endearing painting in his personal collection as a sentimental favorite. (Landseer, not long after his early commissions from Bedford, was kept very occupied with commissions from Queen Victoria who considered him her favorite artist.) In all likelihood, "Safe in the Forest" remained in Landseer's possession and was sold with his estate. Until its recent identification, it had remained an anonymous work. This is its first exhibition. The deer park with its many exotic species still thrives today at the Woburn Estate in Britain, overseen by the 15th Duke of Bedford; the park is now open to the public by reservation.
