Comments: Painted on coast redwood panel. Good condition. With assistance from Titian Ramsay Peale. Agate and Peale were artist-naturalist colleagues on the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-42. In 1841, Agate and Peale and others, explored and did a first mapping of the Oregon Territory where they encountered this rare Pacific coast species of mule deer. This may be the earliest known depiction of the deer as well as one of the earliest paintings related to the Oregon Territory. Much evidence supports this unique collaboration of Agate and Peale.
