Comments: This large charming scene of children playing in the Jardin de Luxembourg has become rare enough, and the image popular enough, that more than one company is making smaller giclee (digital) reproductions of it. However, this is the genuine article by one of the most colorful artists of the time. Truchet was a master lithographer and used eight different lithographic plates, one for each color, to create this work. If you take a look, it appears that there are more than eight colors in the piece. This is because of his ability to speckle one color over another to create a third hue. This is particularly evident in the pink coat of the nurse holding the baby at the upper right. The pink is actually the same red used in the guards’ uniforms, but appears lighter because it is speckled over the cream base color of the paper. Truchet was a painter, printmaker, and also a war hero. Known as a painter of landscapes, portraits and genre scenes, and one of the founders of la Societe des Humoristes, his technique was often impressionistic. In 1914, he volunteered for military services, at age 57. He later commanded a section fighting troops and died while in military service. In 1919 he was honored with an exposition in Paris, "l Exposition des oeuvres des Artistes Morts pur la Patrie", (artists who died for their country). Today, his works are widely known and eagerly sought by collectors and connoisseurs.
