Comments: De Witt Parshall, Santa Barbara, California, 1864-1956. This oil on board is 16" by 20" in a 4" frame. Overall dimensions are 24" by 28". It is signed on the front lower left and also signed and titled verso "Night". It is in excellent condition in an original American Period frame. Parshall studied in Dresden, Germany as well as Paris in 1887-88, He has an extensive exhibition record including the World's Columbian Expo in Chicago in 1893 and the Corcoran Biennial 5 times 1908-1937. His works are in many museums including the Museum of Modern Art and the Detroit Institute of Art as well as in California and Seattle Museums. Parshall had a studio in NY in 1899. He is in Hughes, Artists of California, P&H Samuels, Art at the 19th C Paris Salons, Falk and Who was Who in American Art. His Auction records go up to $30,000 and his works sell for up to $45,000. Born in Buffalo, NY on Aug. 2, 1864, DeWitt Parshall, during his college years, had a marked talent for caricature, much to the dismay of the faculty members. After graduating from Hobart College in 1885, he sailed for Dresden where he entered the Royal Academy. He had further study in Paris with Alexander Harrison and at Académies Cormon and Julian. After moving from New York City to California in 1917, he settled in Santa Barbara where he remained until his death on July 7, 1956. Parshall is best known for his paintings of the Grand Canyon, most of which were done during the years 1910-17; whereas, in California he specialized in landscapes and florals.
