Comments: We are currently purchasing and selling works by William MacGregor Paxton. Paxton is one of America’s most technically gifted, cerebral and competent painters of the figure. His technical ability to exquisitely render flesh tones and paint in a slick academic manner catches people’s eye but very few people realize that color theories were a great preoccupation with this artist. In The Golden Veil Paxton was clearly experimenting with the juxtaposition of orange and gold tones against blue which is their complimentary color. The nude is finished yet the background has a sketchier quality. Paxton executed a number of nudes that display this level of attention and it is a possibility that they stayed in his studio, never went out on exhibition and thus, were not signed before his death. It is possible that this work was done in the late 1920’s or 1930’s.
