Comments: In 1831-32, Henry Ary was painting portraits in Albany and soon after moved to Catskill, NY where, at the encouragement of Thomas Cole, his Catskill neighbor, Ary turned to developing his notable skills into landscape painting. “View from Underhill Pond, Hudson,NY” is one of Ary’s earliest landscapes. In 1844 the artist moved eight miles away to Hudson, returning to his birthplace, and from that time focused on painting Hudson River landscapes. ORIGINAL FRAME: excellent condition (see restoration report); until recently, the painting had never been removed from its frame.
