Biography from AskART:
Adeline (Addie) Ballou was active in Australia and San Francisco. She had many roles including those of painter, author, poet, suffragette and army nurse. Her artwork includes still lifes, genre, birds and animals, marines of California and portraits of westerners.

She was born in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Her mother died when Adeline was young, and the family moved to Wisconsin. She married at age fifteen and educated herself while raising a family. She wrote poems, literary essays and editorials for local publications.

During the Civil War, Adeline Ballou served as a nurse in the 32nd Wisconsin Volunteers Infantry. In 1870, she arrived in San Francisco and studied with Virgil Williams at the School of Design. She opened a portrait studio on Market Street and also became very active in women's rights issues including the introduction of a legislative bill for women to be appointed notaries.

Adeline Ballou died on August 10, 1916 in San Francisco.
