| Born in Compo, Connecticut in 1854, Alfred was a relative of Aaron Burr. During 1871-82 he lived in San Francisco where he worked as an engraver with Wm P. Harrison. Circa 1883-92 he was an illustrator for West Shore magazine. He was a resident of Seattle in 1901 and then lived in Portland, Oregon, where he headed the art department of the Oregonian for 17 years. He died in San Francisco on Sept. 4, 1942.
