| The following, submitted February 2005, is from Ira Bartholomy Hillyer, son of the artist.
Born in Hartford, Connecticut on August 25, 1902 of parents John and Amy (Warner) Bartholomy Amy Hillyer died at her son's home in New London, Connecticut on January 19, 1970.
As a teenager, Amy Hillyer became interested in art while training and working as a color tinter (oil colorist) on black & white and sepia photographs for Johnson Photographer company of Hartford. She worked in oil coloring/tinting photography for Johnson until her marriage. She studied art from 1918 for many years as a student under James Goodwin McManus in Hartford and Old Lyme, and she also studied with Guy C. Wiggins and McManus in summer classes during the 1920s in Old Lyme.
Hillyer exhibited oil paintings for numerous years at the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts in Hartford.. She married Ira Avery Hillyer of East Lyme in Hartford in June of 1931. She was the mother of California Artist Ira Bartholomy Hillyer and Amy Anne Roberta Hillyer Harnish of Rockport, Massachusetts. Amy Hillyer taught son Ira basic and advanced art with instructions starting when he was four years old from 1936 until 1950 at the family home in Niantic, Connecticut. She primarily devoted herself to her family responsibilities after her marriage: her professional "art life" was from 1918 to 1932 and then teaching art lessons to her son thereafter. During the late 1930s and 1940s she completed numerous small oils and pastels, which were given to friends, family and neighbors as gifts and "thank you's".
A charcoal portrait by Hillyer of James Goodwin Mc Manus was the centerforld of the Sunday Magazine Section of the "Hartford Times" sometime in either 1922 or 1923.
