This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Born in Naples, Italy, Antimo Beneduce was a watercolorist of landscape subjects and teacher, who was an instructor at the Cleveland School of Art from 1928 to 1933. After that, he taught privately. He traveled extensively in quest of subject matter, and of his approach to painting, said: "I paint what I see. I try to convey life with all its glory of light and shadow thru the emotional experience it presents to me. I work directly from nature (on the spot) and find working that way brings a closeness to my subject that I never find working indoors in my studio."
He emigrated to the United States with his family when he was age ten, and the family settled in Akron, Ohio. He later studied at the Cleveland School of Art. His talent was recognized by artist Charles Hawthorne, who gave young Beneduce a scholarship to Hawthorne's Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, Massachusetts. After completing that course of study, Beneduce went to New York City where he attended the National Academy of Design, and then took further study in France and Italy.
In 1932, he settled in Chicago, and from there traveled extensively for his landscape subjects, which he painted almost exclusively in watercolor.
From 1927, he began exhibiting at the Chicago Art Institute with the first exhibition there being the International Watercolor Exhibition. He also participated in fifty-one gallery shows throughout the United States as well as numerous group shows in this country and Europe. One-man shows included the Chicago Art Institute, Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC, Albany Institute of Art, and Akron Museum of Art in Akron, Ohio.
He was a member of The American Water Color Society, The Arts Club of Chicago, the Renaissance Society of Chicago, the Ohio Watercolor Club, and the Salmagundi Club of New York.
Submitted, August 2003, by Sidney C. Hamper, Chicago IL. His source is consignment papers for the collection of the John H. Vanderpoel Art Association. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
