The following personal account was submitted by Colin
Treworgy, March 2006:
I knew Arnold Burchess. Arnold
spent the summers in the '60s and '70s in a cottage next door to my family's
home in Harpswell, Maine.
He may have lived there earlier than that, but I wasn't old enough to know
it. In 1971 he had his cottage winterized and expanded into a house and
moved there year-round.
His wife was named Anne and he had a son named
Robert. Arnold painted many
watercolors of the shore and sea in the Harpswell area. He had an old
wooden sailboat that he sailed himself. His wife wouldn't go near it!
One summer when I was 16, he served as crew for me on the
sailboat that I raced. During one race we were overtaken by a
thunderstorm. As we watched the large thunderheads and sheets of rain
rolling towards us, he was so excited that he announced he was going to paint a
picture of the event- and he later did. Arnold
moved to California sometime in
the late '70s or '80s.
