The following biography was submitted by the artist's family, June 2005

Arthur J. Barbour was born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, the heart of America's once thriving silk industry. He was the youngest of four children born to Drs. Peter and Alma Barbour. After attending local schools, a young Arthur Barbour responded to his country's call of duty by joining the U.S. Navy during WWII. Upon his return from active duty, he enrolled in the Newark Public School of Fine and Industrial Arts with postgraduate work in his chosen career field of watercolor painting.

The many facets of Arthur Barbour's artistic talent have been regularly highlighted in numerous publications of the Ford Times, Woman's Day, The Artist Magazine (Canadian Publication), and American Artist Magazine. His works have been featured for over thirty years on American Artist Group Christmas cards and on many calendars. They have also been exemplified in publications by M. Grumbacher Library "Art of Acrylic Painting" and Wendon Blake's books "Acrylic Watercolor Painting" and " Complete Guide to Acrylic Painting" by Watson-Guptill Publications. Through the international publication of his three books "Painting Buildings in Watercolor", "Painting the Seasons in Watercolor", and "Watercolor: The Wet Technique" all published by Watson-Guptill Publications, Mr. Barbour has unselfishly passed his accumulated knowledge on to millions of students in America, England, and Japan.

Arthur Barbour hold memberships in many national art organizations, among them: the National Academy of Design; American Watercolor Society (past director); Allied Artists of America; Audubon Artists; and New Jersey Watercolor Society (past secretary).

Mr. Barbour's words are included in the permanent collections of: The U.S. Department of the Navy; Essex Chemical Corporation; Equitable Life Assurance Society of U.S.; Prudential Insurance Company (NJ); Ford Motor Company (MI); Marietta College (OH); Fidelity Union (NJ); Norfolk Museum of Arts & Sciences (VA); Delvitte, Haskins & Sells (World Trade Center NY); and a collection of fifteen of his watercolors of major shrines throughout the world are featured at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Heart located in Washington, NJ (USA). His works are also included in numerous other private collections.

For his outstanding contribution in the area of watercolor, Mr. Barbour has been listed in "Who's Who in America"; "Who's Who in the East"; Who's Who in American Art" and the "Dictionary of International Biography, England". He is a recipient of over one hundred awards.

Arthur Barbour and his wife, Margie, made their home in Ringwood, New Jersey along with their five children. Currently, Mr. Barbour is being cared for at a nursing home in his home state where he continues to bravely struggle, as he has for over twenty years, with Parkinson's Disease.
