| A leading art figure in South Texas in the mid to late 20th century,
Benjamin Perkins spent the early part of his life as a military figure
but took up art in his later years. He was born in Houston and
trained in civil engineering at the Virginia Military Institute in
Charlottesville, earning his degree in 1923. Then he
enrolled in the University of Texas where he earned a bachelor of
science degree in 1925, and a master of science in architecture in
1935. Further education included a Master of Fine Arts
degree in 1954 from Claremont College in California and attendance at
Columbia University.
In the 1930s, Bailey was on martial-law duty in the East Texas
oilfields as a member of the National Guard. While doing easel
painting in his spare time, he taught mathematics and cavalry drill at
North Texas Peacock Military Academy in Dallas.
In 1936, he joined the art faculty at Texas A & M University in
Kingsville, and then served in the army during World War
II. In 1950, he began his study at Claremont College, and
from 1951 to 1968, served as head of the university Art Department in
Kingsville, Texas. He died in Kingsville, five years after his
retirement.
