This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Bernard Boutet de Monvel, born in Paris on 10 August 1881 and died in
the Azores on 28 October 1949, was a French painter, designer and
illustrator. As a portrait painter, he was known for clean lines
and pale colours.
He grew up in Meudon at 7 Trail White Stones in the house where his
father Louis-Maurice Boutet de Monvel was born. He studied with
his father, also a renowned painter, and later with Luc-Olivier Merson
for painting and Jean Dampt for sculpture. From 1903 he exhibited
in various shows.
During the First World War, he served as an aviator in the French Army
of the East under the command of Captain Denain to the Salonika
expedition in 1915, alongside Paul Jouve, Jacques Richepin and
Prejelan. Affected by Lyautey in Fez in 1918, he fell in love
with this city and painted from the terrace of his house.
He was a member of the National Society of Fine Arts and the Salon d'Automne .
He was a highly influenctial illustrator of French children's books and
also worked for magazines including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and The
Gazette and did fashionable and romantic Orientalist landscape painting
during his exotic travels.
He also stayed in the United States, where he painted several
celebrities. He learned it is folly to build in Palm Beach,
Florida.
Bernard Boutet de Monvel died in the same plane crash that killed the boxer Marcel Cerdan and violinist Ginette Neveu.
