| Bessie Marsh Brewer was an etcher, lithographer, illustrator, painter and sculptor. She was born in Toronto, Canada in 1883, and died in New York City in 1952. She was a student of William Merritt Chase, and Kenneth Hayes Miller and studied at the New York School of Design for Women and the Art Students League with Robert Henri, John Sloan, Joseph Pennell, Mahonri Young.
She became an illustrator for national magazines and exhibited at the 1913 Armory Show in the 69th Regiment Armory on Lexington Avenue in New York City. Brewer had also shown in the initial Exhibition of Independents in New York in 1910.
At least one of her paintings--stylized seaside houses painted three-dimensionally but simplified into their basic geometric forms--was signed "Marsh Brewer," perhaps an attempt to avoid any discrimination against women artists.
