Biography from Tree's Place Gallery:
| Copley Master Betsy Bennett's beautiful and graceful paintings tend to
reflect her interest in man's attempts to deal with nature, whether by
accepting its wild diversity, or by imposing our own artifacts and
notions of order upon it. The layering techniques necessary for
working in egg tempera produces a richness of color and soft glowing
clarity which seems especially well matched to Bennett's subject matter
-- particularly her paintings based on the water vapor suffused light
of Cape Cod.
Bennett was educated at the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia where
she studied under Reginald Marsh, George Sklar, Will Barnet, and Frank
Reilly. Later, she studied egg tempera technique briefly with Robert
Vickrey.
She moved to New England in 1951, and except for four years in Oregon
from 1976-1980, has been a continuous resident of Massachusetts. She
has won many prizes for her work in open juried shows, including First
Place awards from the Cape Cod Art Association (1973, 1975, and 1976);
First Place in the Coos (Oregon) Art Museum Annual Juried Show (1976);
a major grant from the Oregon Arts Commission Competition (1977), and
First Place in Watercolors at the New England Open Juried Show of the
South Shore Art Center (1986).
She has been designated as a Copley Master by the Copley Society of
Boston, having won the Excellence in Technique Award (1982), the John
Singleton Copley Award (1983), and the Robb Sagendorph Award (1991)
from the Copley Society. Betsy Bennett was the cover artist, and the
subject of a major feature article in the June, 1990 issue of American
Artist magazine. |
