Biography from a third party submitted on 01/15/2006:
He grew up on the New Jersey shore and has been depicting the beach in his work for over 25 years.  Bitter's frequent travels to the Caribbean and other beach locales inspired him to continue this genre.  Today all of his art is in the medium of Pastel, but with his own special style described below.

Currently living in Austin,Texas with his wife and son, he holds a B.F.A. from the University of North Carolina, and studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Philadelphia College of Art.

He was a Graphic Designer for Betz Converse and Murdoch, as well as the Mobil Oil Corporation.  He served as Co-adjunct Instructor at Rutgers University and the Philadelphia College of Art, and as Instructor in a workshop-seminar for the San Antonio independent school system.

His work is represented by galleries in Texas, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida. Bruce Bitter has received over one hundred awards for his work and his paintings are found in corporate and private collections across the US, the Caribbean and in Europe. To truly appreciate his art, we have included a description of how he produces his art in his own words: "About my work…….I begin by working up a loose drawing on magnani pesci or arches 88 paper.  I then proceed with one of two techniques to create an under painting as a foundation for the pastels.  Using a silkscreen, I paint with silkscreen inks directly on the screen as if it was a canvas……Working quickly to keep the inks moist, establishing large areas of color.  I then push the inks through the screen with a squeegee onto the paper.  This gives me an image with a smooth surface to apply the pastels to.  The second technique is to paint directly onto the drawing using pure pigments and printing inks.  This leaves me with a more textured surface to apply pastel to.  Although realistic in nature, I rely on color and the pastel mark to interpret my final result.  I then crop and cut the piece and adhere it to another sheet of paper.. My beach pieces have always been playful in nature thus the added collage material along the bottom.  A hand drawn fish and a tropical postage stamp.  My work is all ORIGINAL and I have NO reproductions made of my work."
