This biography from the Archives of AskART:

An illustrator for Time, Life, Look, True, True West, Saturday Evening Post, Good Housekeeping, Readers Digest,  and others, he also painted for advertising campaigns,  most notably wildlife paintings for the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company and The Marlboro Man.

Bomberger was born in 1918 in Manteca, California. He attended High School in Modesto and the College of Arts and Crafts, Berkeley, CA,  Art Center, Los Angeles.

In early 1964 he was retained to to do an 'introductory series' of advertisements in print media.  He was to illustrate a new Marlboro Man for Marlboro Country.  This was interesting, because by 1964, the accepted medium for print media advertising was almost exclusively photography, not illustration.  History shows that Bomberger did at least five print advertisements. Each ad put a new piece into play, of what would later become the world famous Marlboro Man persona.  On 10/23/1964 the back cover of Time Magazine featured his first Marlboro Man illustration.
