| Born in Kansas, Caroline Bowles was a painter of landscapes and also
decorative work in art nouveau style. Her subjects included the
Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park, and she had studios in
Massachusetts, France, California, Nevada and Arizona.
She
studied with William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League and then
in Paris at the Academie Julian. In 1916, she went to Pasadena
from Boston and lived for four years in Altadena where she shared a
studio with Ellen Kellogg.
A plein-air painter in modernist style, she was a member of the
California Art Club and the Modern Art Society of Los Angeles, which
she helped organize in 1916 and which was the city's first group
dedicated to modernist trends in art.
She exhibited paintings at the San Francisco Art Association and batiks
and watercolors at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Caroline
Bowles returned to Massachusetts, living in Winchester until her death
on November 12, 1923. Her husband was artist Herman Dudley
Murphy.
