BIOGRAPHY
I am the second son of sculptor / architect William E. Burk, Jr. and was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1947. An art loving family in an art loving community gave me the environment and implied permission to become a painter.

Following a stint in the US Navy 1969 1971. I moved from San Diego back to Albuquerque to finish an interrupted college experience on the G.I. Bill while I began to pursue a market for my fledgling work. I graduated with a B.F.A. from the University of New Mexico in 1973. A miracle came my way early on. The parents of a former classmate commissioned me to make 72 paintings for 4 steamships that were being built in Bath, Maine. The ships were to be named after the states, Maine, Nevada, Illinois & Arizona, and the wonderful client sent us on mini-trips to each of the states for subject research. The paintings were only priced at $125 each, but at 18 paintings to be delivered at 6 month intervals for 2 years, the project gave me the start I needed. Money went a lot farther in 1972 than it does today.

I built my market gradually, with good galleries in Santa Fe, Scottsdale, and Denver primarily, and many other exhibitions and galleries along the way. Three of my representatives closed in the same year, 1990, and it seemed time for a change. An artist friend had a thriving mural business going, and was looking to replace a partner. I decided to join this more stable business, and we painted client-oriented work for corporations, schools, hospitals and municipalities for 10 years. In April 2000, we completed a 35,000 square foot project for the State of New Mexico, and realized this was the time to resume studio painting if we were ever to go back. I have been building an inventory of new paintings with style and subject matter grown from the mural work. At 55 I have found new galleries in Florida and Arizona, and am finding acceptance for the new work.
