This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Note from Shelly Blake:

Clayson Baker was born in Hillisburg, Indiana in 1908. He moved to
Indianapolis when he was 12. In 1940, he began oil painting in the fields of still-life, portrait and landscape. He studied landscape painting under George Jo Mess and portrait paining under Simon Baus.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The following is from Kent Van Tyle, Indianapolis, Indiana. He cites the book "Brown County Art and Artists" by the Brown County Art Association:

A native of Hillisburg, Indiana, Clayson Baker (1909-1975) studied with George Jo Mess and Simon Baus. He was a member of the Hoosier Salon and the Brown County Art Gallery and exhibited widely throughout Indiana. He seems to have had a fondness for Salt Creek (located near Nashville, IN) as several of his paintings have been of Salt Creek scenes.

As the 1971 book "Brown County Art and Artists" reports, Baker was a "full-time artist and art teacher" who had "never stopped using his talent in productive ways since the age of 9." He maintained studios in Nashville and Indianapolis.

Note from Kent Van Tyle: The following is from Judith Vale Newton and Carol Weiss: A Grand Tradition: The Art and Artists of the Hoosier Salon, 1925-1990. Published by the Hoosier Salon Patrons Association, Indianapolis, IN 1993
