This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following biography is from Wayne Oxtoby, a co-worker of the artist:

A third generation Tucsonan, Dan Bates spent much of his early childhood on his grandparent's "El Coronado Ranch" in the Chiracahua Mountains of Southeastern Arizona. His involvement in art has been since childhood and his passion for the American West is deep.

Bates is a traditional sculptor of 'lost wax' bronzes with a Western theme. Renowned for his accurate, equestrian sculptures, Dan's work captures the working cowboy, the United States Cavalry, and desert wildlife in all scales - from affordable to monumental. Most of his works come from the time when the West was young and all are historically correct - a hallmark of Bates' work.

Having studied under renowned New Mexico sculptor Tom Knapp and master sculptor Walker Hancock of Gloucester, Massachusetts - Dan's sculptures range in size from small to heroic public projects. Understanding the subject is essential to Bates, although models, photographs and reference material are used for guidance, "nothing can take the place of personal experience for the overall authenticity of a piece."

Dan is an accomplished equestrian and a founding member of the 1st Company Arizona Governor's Horse Guards," a mounted cavalry regiment. He sculpts as often as possible at the Cobra Ranch in Aravaipa Canyon, Arizona, where he raises championship Texas Longhorn cattle.

Dan Bates' work is found in galleries throughout Arizona and the United States. His work is represented in the permanent collection of the Cowboy Hall of Fame and of the Tucson Museum of Art.

His works have been commissioned by major corporations including Northern Telecom, Hughes Aircraft, Fidelity Insurance Company, Tucson Medical Center Foundation, Nalco Chemical Company and, Carondolet Health Services to name a few. He was commissioned to sculpt the monumental bronze entitled "Chief Trumpeter," which stands at Fort Lowell Park in Tucson, Arizona (a frontier cavalry fort - now a Tucson City Park), as well as a commissioned, life-sized monument for the Fort Huachuca Museum Society, which stands at Fort Huachuca, Arizona (an active U.S. military installation since frontier days). Dan was honored by the Tucson Festival Society as Tucson's "Artist of the Year" (1993-1994).

Dan Bates maintains a working studio at "Trail Dust Town," 6541 East Tanque Verde Road, Tucson, Arizona 85715 (520)722-2706.
