This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Oakland based artist Dean Byington began his career creating photo collages by projecting old daguerrotypes piecemeal on to canvases painted with photo emulsion.

Today, the 1988 graduate (MFA) of the University of California at Berkeley, creates dense fantasy landscapes using a collage, silkscreen and painting process.   Byington cuts and pastes images from old engravings onto paper and connects them with his own drawing and painting to create savage landscapes with fairy tale references.  The artist then silkscreens the collage onto linen and applys jewel-toned washes to add to the atmosphere of the narrative work.

Biography from Gallery Paule Anglim:
Dean Byington’s paintings on stretched canvas  and very detailed paper collages depict dream-like landscapes made up of thousands of fine graphic lines. The artist paints and transfers paint through delicate silkscreens, creating a fragilematrix of lines confounding depth and flatness.
